development of the damara Stud

The stud experienced a large growth in numbers during the period 1994 to 1995 mainly by means of embryo flushing, but also by natural breeding. Few animals were bought from other breeders. She exported embryos to Australia in 1995.

Up to 1999 she mainly used the following rams from the best available bloodlines in South Africa :

The ram 97.91.74 was bought from Mr Roe Wiid, previous president of the Damara Sheep Breeders’ Association of SA, after the ram was the South African Reserve Champion at the National Championships at Rustenburg in 1994. He sired top quality offspring.   r9791.jpg (14924 bytes) of9791.jpg (12241 bytes)

The ram GBD 9364 was bought from Mr F Blumenthal, another prominent breeder, at the Griekwastad Veld Ram Auction for a record price. His sire was the Cape Province Champion during 1994 and his grandfather was the famous ram “Chocolate” of Mr Blumenthal. By using this ram the conformation of the sheep in the stud improved noticeably.  r9364.jpg (17170 bytes) of9364.jpg (12885 bytes)

The ram NAU 9401 is a black and white ram imported from Kaokoland in Namibia by F & S du Toit Damara Stud. This ram consistently sired quality ewes with all the original characteristics of the Damaras herded by the indigenous people of Namibia. Mr Clynton Collett, previous president of the Damara Sheep Breeders’ Association, also used this ram in his stud. rnau.jpg (18720 bytes) ofnau.jpg (16530 bytes)

During the 1999-2000 season the stud used four rams in an exchange scheme from the best bloodlines in the stud of Mr Clynton Collett, while Mr Collett used rams GBD 8051, GBD 8028 and NAU 9401 from Geelbeksdam Damara Stud and F & S du Toit Damara Stud. rexch.jpg (18182 bytes)

Both these rams sired quality offspring in Geelbeksdam Damara Stud.

Since the standard of the stud is by now established, it is possible to use Geelbeksdam-bred rams in the various unrelated groups.
