Geelbeksdam Damara Stud

Since the Damara Sheep was selected by nature over thousands of years for toughness and good mothering instincts, amongst others, the owner, Christine du Toit, strives to breed Damaras which faithfully exhibit these original characteristics, as set by the Damara Sheep Breeders’ Society of  South Africa.

The stud consists of five family groups to ensure that no inbreeding takes place. Record keeping is essential in this regard. Only the best available rams are used in the various groups. The best rams bred in each group are used in the next unrelated family group. By using this method the standard of the whole stud is constantly improving.

She has complete records of all the Damaras in her stud. The animals are registered at the South African Stud Book and Livestock Improvement Association and the stud takes part in the National Mutton Sheep and Goat Performance and Progeny Testing Scheme.

Stud animals are sold from the veld to enable them to adapt well to new circumstances in other areas. The stud also takes part in two  veld-ram projects where the rams’ growth rate is tested under natural circumstances before being offered for sale at an auction.

The stud has not recently participated in shows, championships and national auctions, because the above mentioned breeding policy results in a different marketing strategy of well adapted sheep to natural conditions.
